Leading social media commentator Jerry George on his ‘Early in the Morning’ program on Facebook has blasted the ULP government for ‘trying to hoodwink’ Vincentians that a Sandals brand can be set up at the troubled Buccament Bay resort any time soon.
The government hosted Adam Stewart, Deputy Chairman of Sandals Resort International (SRI) yesterday in a hasty ceremony to sign a contract at the resort location.
The internationally renowned Sandals brand will benefit the country’s fledging tourism industry. The company plans to employ up to 1,000 persons. They will provide customer service for 350 suites ranging from one to five bedrooms.
While Jerry George on his morning show was questioning the legal status of the land on which Sandals is to develop their famous “Beaches Resort brand”, it has been reported that the SVG government either intends to or has already publicly acquired the 40 odd acres of land as proposed for the upgraded development.
However, George noted for his no holds barred commentary said, “this is just a vote capturing exercise”.
He argues that the timing of the announcement must be greeted with scepticism as the project lies in the heart of the Central Leeward constituency which was mired in election controversy in 2015.
“It cannot and does not make sense”, said Jerry George earlier today.
The government in his opinion is seeking to placate central leeward constituents in what is expected to be a battleground constituency in the upcoming general elections.
There have been several failed attempts in the recent past to operationalise the failed project. Local and foreign investors who had previously expressed interest in taking over the property have all hinted that the Buccament Bay legal quagmire is too complex to produce any successful result.
