Viewers of the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) virtual meeting last night was surprised when a scripted speech by the Central Leeward candidate took a turn.
Ben Exeter was recounting his journey as a politician when he became overwhelmed by emotions when he began speaking of the 2015 general elections which was mired in controversy.
The NDP maintains that numerous irregularities caused the party the Central Leeward seat and ultimately government.
“We stood side by side, and it was your presence that gave me the strength to overcome fraud and illegal activities that stole the elections from under us”, said a teary-eyed Exeter whose voice broke several times.
“It was your presence that gave me strength when they lock me up and heard your voices outside the barracks”.
“It was your presence on social media and many of you in the court room as we fought for justice during the election petition”.
Those sitting in the audience offered encouraging words during the speech telling Mr. Exeter to take his time.
Exeter told the audience that “you owe the people in power nothing. They work for you. So when they come to you and talk about how you ungrateful, how you need to vote for them because they gave your sons and daughters X,Y,Z, tell them that is not how the story will end again”.
“Tell them you deserve what you have because you worked for it. Tell them you will no longer be ruled by guilt and blind loyalty.”
Ben Exeter who migrated as a child and returned in 2015 to offer himself as a candidate for the NDP will make his second attempt to win the battleground constituency.
It is widely expected that he would face first time ULP candidate Orande Brewster.
