The New Democratic Party (NDP) is the epitome of a walking and talking contradiction. You can write chapter and verse on how the party flip flops on every major issue. At the very least, the party is confused about its core platform or principled positions. What does it actually mean to say you’re NDP? What is the philosophy of the party? How much variance is acceptable between policy and practice?
Mr. Editor, it seems that anything goes as party candidates and party officiaries do what they want as they ‘eat ah food’.
Take for instance, on December 13, 2019, the NDP published the following:
“Sexual violence against women is a major concern in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In her 2017 budget presentation, Senator Marcia Barnwell addressed the issue of rape. She called it a rape culture. She declared, “There is something very nasty and ugly beneath the surface of our people. It is tearing away at the very fabric of society; and added to that, there seems to be an atmosphere of dejection, hopelessness, and helplessness”.
On this same day, another media report said:
“St. Vincent and the Grenadines Opposition Leader, Dr. Godwin Friday Sunday night lamented what he describes as “a rape and sexual violence crisis” in the country”.
“Sadly, we have in St. Vincent and the Grenadines not merely a rape culture but a rape and sexual violence crisis,” Dr. Friday, president of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) told a town hall meeting at the Friends of Crown Heights Educational Center in Brooklyn”.
Lo and Behold, we have one of the candidates for the NDP, Mr Israel Bruce defending one of the most dastardly and wicked acts a human being can commit on a child: Rape.
In what world of principle, can a man who professes to be god fearing and who argues for the rights of women and children in a political context, about turn, and defends someone who commits the most egregious crime of rape against a 5 year old. That person does not fear God but man. He fears his wallet!
It is this ‘eat ah food’ mentality shrouded in legal jargon why our society is broken. It is the same lawyers you find defending these perpetrators all the time. Why is that so?
NDP lawyers like to argue that they are duty bound to accept cases allocated to them by the court. Ok fine! Why though all the nasty, worthless murderers and rapists end up being represented by NDP affiliated lawyers? Something is wrong somewhere.
Maybe the universe is trying to tell us something.
P.S Mr Editor, I saw your general invitation to letter writers to become columnists on your platform. I am giving this my earnest consideration.
