In the past 17 hours, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the candidacy of incumbent New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate Roland ‘Patel’ Matthews who is the Member of Parliament for the North Leeward constituency.

The shadow Agriculture minister for the NDP has raised just $30USD of his $30,000 USD goal so far in his effort to retain the marginal seat. He won by 12 votes in the 2015 general elections.

The appeal for donation stated:

“Under the current administration, the constituency of North Leeward has been grossly neglected for almost 20 years. As a member of Parliament, I am keenly aware of the damage this neglect has inflicted on our constituency”.

“There is a national unemployment rate of 45% for young people. The overall figure for the labour force is 26%. In North Leeward the figures are much higher with unemployment among young people at between 75 to 80%”.

“Our young people are giving up hope and after almost twenty years the government clearly has no plan on how to create jobs. This sense of betrayal undermines faith in our ability to create a community that works for everyone”.

He has set out education, sports, health, agriculture, fishing, tourism and roads as among his top priorities if re-elected as part of a New Democratic Party government.

The funds will be used for: “transportation and meals on election day, obtaining birth certifications for voter registration, providing meals for volunteers and transportation to and from Kingstown for supplies”.
