KINGSTOWN, SVG (BreadFruit News) – The East Kingstown Mix and Mingle event for the New Democratic Party scheduled to kick off today bumped into an ‘administrative block’.
The event being hosted by party candidate Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble was advertised to take place at the Rockies Community Centre at 5:00 pm today Saturday 26th September 2020.
However, Mr Bramble received word that permission was rescinded. BreadFruit News reached out to Mr Bramble as part of our investigation and was told that “no reason was given” as to why permission was no longer granted.
He told BreadFruit News that:
“We followed the necessary procedure including obtaining police permission. We were informed at the close of work day yesterday Friday September 25th that we can no longer hold our mix and mingle event at the Rockies Community Center. This came from the Ministry of Community Development.”
As the Campaign moves into another gear, both parties have been increasing their public events. However, the NDP has complained that several government institutions including NBC radio St. Vincent and the Grenadines have not been fair to the party.
Public Relations Officer Lavern King and General Secretary Mr Tyrone James of the NDP have complained that the radio station has not granted equal access to the State media institution to party leader Dr Godwin Friday.
In a letter to management of the radio station, Mr James said at the time:
“The Leader of the Opposition is a constitutional position in our system of government. As the person holding that position for the time being, Dr. Friday has a responsibility to address the nation on matters of public interest and importance.”
However, Bramble remains resolute that the event will go on, moving to a new location in the same area.
In a Facebook post, he cited his famous refrain:
“The power of the people is more powerful than the people in power.… Thanks to the people of East Kingstown for making this possible!! I salute you!! What ah community we have no choice but to love you!”
The event is advertised to feature games and entertainment by former calypso monarch ‘D Man Age’ and other singers including Papa Iston and Ninja.
We have not yet been able to reach Minister of Community Development Hon Frederick Stevenson for his comments on the matter. Our WhatsApp message has been read but we are awaiting his response and will update the article accordingly when more information is provided to us.
