KINGSTOWN, SVG (BreadFruit News) – Persons in Mayreau were able to see the side of Central Kingstown MP Hon St. Clair Leacock that has made him known to be one of the best platform speakers in competitive electoral politics.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) journeyed to the Southern Grenadines over the weekend to drum up support in its bid to unseat the governing Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration.

He recited that the first job of a politician is to be a representative of the people as a parliamentary representative.

“The first job of a person when they are elected, is to who? The first responsibility is to the people who put you there. Doesn’t that make sense?”

“People elected you to be their representative. Isn’t that so? And if you are the people representative, before you be a minister of anything, represent the people.”

“That’s the first order of the day, if you don’t do anything else for the rest of your life in the five years, represent the people who elected you to office, plain and simple.”

Leacock who returned to St. Vincent while pursuing doctoral studies in the UK to enter elective politics had been a long standing Public Relations Officer of the party and later went on to become Vice President of the New Democratic Party (NDP). However, he lost his bid in a bruising battle to become political leader of the party two years ago.

The incumbent MP argued that the government has failed to represent the people and would not be able to stand on their record of performance in the upcoming general elections.

“They cannot come in this election on the basis of their record of performance. They have all kind of excuse why you must give them another five years to do what they didn’t do twenty years ago and they lie like hell.”

“Oh I did pass last night, the place been dark, you nah been hear the dog bark? I been ah blow me horn, me see you been ah talk to somebody so me go straight, me didn’t want wake you up, wake who up?”

“They love to be called Mr Minister. Politics is about representing people and the truth be told this great institution, I didn’t use the word political party, this great institution called the New Democratic Party is steeped in representative politics.”

Representative Leacock called for his constituency development fund proposal to be instituted to correct some of the constitutional deficiencies and challenges.

He cited the challenge of elected members of parliament having to depend on a powerful prime minister who may distribute financial resources at his pleasure and ‘may appoint and disappoint.’

“The constitution needed to go on to say we shall provide monies for the development of each of those constituencies that have been elected,” he said speaking of the lack of resources to help fix drains, provide jobs and trim overhanging trees within opposition held constituencies.
