KINGSTOWN, SVG (BreadFruit News) – Given several monikers by supporters of his party, Prime Minister and Political Leader of the Unity Labour Party (ULP) Dr Ralph Gonsalves has embraced the love and attention he is receiving on the campaign trail.
It is not the first time that a line in one of Dr Gonsalves’ speeches has caught the imagination of his fellow comrades and many of the artistes who perform on the ULP platform.
For the general elections in 2010, international artiste Skinny Fabulous released the popular “Shout Labour” campaign hit which featured one of those famed political salvos:
“Well if I am the Champion and I have the belt, you don’t run and hide from me. If I ask a question, you answer me because you want the belt, you want the championship belt. Tell him come for it, and every time I punch him, I ask him What’s my name, Arnhim, What’s my name?”
A speech at an ordinary pre-campaign event in North Leeward a few months ago has emerged as a rallying call for labour supporters who go in a frenzy-like state when Dr Gonsalves or the ‘Comrade’ as he is also well-known graces the stage.
He said at the launch of the North Leeward Youth Arm:
“What the NDP is interested in is commess and melee. You could lick me up, you could knock me down, I get up back up, I am a hard man fo dead.”
Those lines like the one before has been reproduced musically, this time in a song by Jamesy P called “Ancient Warrior” which was released a month ago. The popular song is now a main stay on radio and as part of the national campaign.
But there has been strong opposition to the new description of Dr Gonsalves as the “World Boss”. Opposition critics has tried to link this characterization with convicted murderer, Jamaican artiste Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer,
Often referred to as ‘Worl Boss’, the singer was convicted in 2014 of the murder of a former associate Clive Lizard Williams. However, there is another Jamaican, cricket legend Chris Gayle who also carries a version of the title due to his cricketing prowess especially in the short forms of the game.
Dr Gonsalves has lashed out at critics who are trying to impugn his character beyond the acceptable level of political picong.
He said in Chateaubelair over the weekend:
“They say that ‘World Boss’ mean I like Vybz Kartel, that I kill people, what kind of rubbish is that? I am the ‘World Boss’ in the politics and lifting up St. Vincent and the Grenadines higher.
“185 votes at the General Assembly, we sit on the UN Security Council. That is world boss activity.”
“The builder of the Argyle International Airport, the Canouan Jet Port, the Rabacca bridge, ICT revolution in St. Vincent.”
The Prime Minister listed several projects and initiative his governing Unity Labour Party that metaphorically fits the ‘world boss’ status.
