A post on social media site Facebook by NDP Media Assistant Colin Graham has left many in shock as Vincentians continue to exercise their right to vote in the general elections.
Graham who works for the New Democratic Party took a picture of his ballot paper showing the candidate he voted for and posted this on his social media account.
According to the election law, if anyone exposes the mark showing who they voted for, the ballot will be declared spoilt.
Elections officials spent weeks prior to the election warning persons not to reveal their ballot by taking photos. Supervisor of Elections advised persons to either leave their phones on the outside or turn them off before voting.
While there is no law against taking a photo of your ballot, the law pertains to the secrecy of the ballot which must be protected.
Graham who voted for NDP’s candidate in East St. George Laverne H Velox ‘foolishly’ showed his voter number and ballot number making his details easy to trace using the online electoral portal.
It is left to be seen what happens from this event. Persons below the Facebook post expressed anger and frustration with Mr Graham and reminded him he was breaking the law.
The Facebook post has since been deleted.
We will update accordingly.
