MOFA would like to express profound regret at the decision by the Guyanese government to terminate a bilateral agreement on the establishment of a Taiwan Office in the country.
Not 24 hours after MOFA published news of the agreement, the PRC pressured Guyana into terminating it. Despite our continued diplomatic efforts, the Guyanese government still hasn’t changed its position.
We condemn in strong terms this additional instance of the PRC bullying and putting pressure on Taiwan’s international space and the right of Taiwanese people to take part in international affairs.
The PRC’s continuous attempts to isolate Taiwan go against the statement of the leader of the PRC to the international community, “The strong should not bully the weak. Decisions should not be made by simply showing off strong muscles or waving a big fist.”
The PRC government saying one thing and doing another just goes further in revealing its sinister nature and straining cross-strait relations.
Taiwan is a sovereign nation and its people have the right to interact with and establish ties with every nation around the world as well as participate in international organizations.
Our diplomatic staff have been working endlessly towards Taiwan’s continued existence and development, and we’ll continue to push for more international space for Taiwan to uphold the dignity and rights of our nation.
