VOLCANIC GAS MONITORING HELPS SCIENTISTS UNDERSTAND HOW ERUPTION MAY UNFOLD

Dr Thomas Christopher (Stone Temple), Lead, Scientific Team, sets up, deploys and retrieves volcanic gas samples from La Soufrière’s new dome using filter packs.

Filters are dipped into a solution so that the gas of interest reacts with the relevant filter.

Filters are then analyzed to detect the presence and concentration of magmatic gases such as Hydrogen Chloride (HCI), Hydrogen Flouride (HF), Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and Sulphur Dioxide (SO2).

Monitoring the chemistry of volcanic gases gives clues on how deep within the earth the gases are being emitted which can help scientists better understand how the eruption may unfold.
