NEW POLYMER EC$5 TO BE RELEASED NEXT MONTH

The new polymer EC$5 bill is expected to be released by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) by the end of March.

The ECCB had projected to release the note in September 2020 but it was delayed due to a decrease in demand.

Since May 2019, consumers in the currency union have been spending polymer notes following the release of the EC$50. The polymer $100,20, and $10 notes are already in circulation.

Rosbert Humphrey, Acting Director of the Currency Management Department, notes the EC$5 is the most circulated currency note in member states but it is the least demanded bill.

He said the notes may not be issued in all member states at the same time since commercial banks in each country have different levels of stock and that will determine when the polymer note will be released.

Humphrey also urged consumers not to crease, crumple or apply heat to the polymer notes since it can compromise the bill.

“It’s your money, take care of it,” Humphrey said in an ECCB statement.
