OVER 10,000 VINCENTIANS NEED PUBLIC TRANSPORT IF LA SOUFRIERE RUMBLES

Director of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Michelle Forbes, says the organisation has collected information on how many people living in the Red Zone and Orange Zone will require the use of public transportation to evacuate if the La Soufriere volcano erupts explosively.  

Speaking during the last RoundTable Talk on La Soufriere, Forbes said 10,943 persons have indicated they do not have private transport and will need to depend on public transportation.

This information was collected as part of NEMO’s transportation plan.  

Persons who will be evacuated by buses will be required to wear masks while onboard. The NEMO Director said personnel will be given masks to distribute to those persons who do not have one when entering the bus.  

At the shelter, evacuees in keeping with the COVID-19 protocols, persons will also be required to wear masks, practice hand sanitising, have a temperature check, register and follow the emergency spacing to allow for social distancing among families. 

The following is a list of assembly points for Red Zone and Orange Zone Communities. Assembly points are areas in the community where persons can go to be transported to a safe area in the event that an evacuation order is issued, and they don’t have their own transportation.
