We note with deep sadness the death of Mr. Parnel Campbell Q.C, who passed away last night, Monday 19th April 2021.
Mr. Campbell, popularly known as ‘PR’, was a long-standing senior member of the legal profession in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Caribbean. He hosted the public service legal information program “The Law and You” which ran on SVG TV for an uninterrupted period of 24 years. He was a well-respected lawyer and defender of the legal and political rights of fellow Vincentians. Many benefited individually and as a community from his professional skill and diligence.
Mr. Campbell was a former New Democratic Party Member of Parliament who served under the James Mitchell-led NDP administration as Attorney General from 1987 – 1995. He also held Ministerial and other notable positions such as Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Speaker and Minister of Justice, Information and Culture. He served as Parliamentary Representative for the East Kingstown and the Central Kingstown constituencies from 1987 – 1989 and 1989 – 1998 respectively. “PR” also gave invaluable service as a long-standing Chairman of the New Democratic Party.
Mr. Campbell was instrumental in getting the National Broadcasting Corporation, Radio 705, to broadcast live worship services from religious denominations and in changing laws that discriminated against women in this country. He also played a critical role in the preparation of the Revised Laws of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and in the efforts to revise the Constitution of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 2009.
He will be truly missed. We extend our sympathy and love to his family. May God comfort them and receive our friend into his arms.
May his soul Rest in Peace.
