Handal Roban ticked off his name as part of the St Vincent and the Grenadines team to this year’s World Juniors Athletics Championships, set for Nairobi, Kenya, 17th to 22nd August.
Roban made the Men’s 800 M qualifying standard at the 2021 Grace Kennedy ISSA Boys/Girls Championships, last Saturday at the Jamaica National Stadium.
Competing for the Jamaica College in the final of the Class One event, Roban timed 1: 50: 39. The World Juniors qualifying time is 1:50:80.
His time, though, was not good enough to give him a position; he had to settle for the fourth place.
He, however, claimed his first medal in his maiden outing at the Championships, when he gained a bronze in the 1500M. He clocked 4: 01: 48 to earn that medal.
Joining Roban in gaining their first medals at the prestigious Jamaica Champs, were Uroy Ryan and Verrol Sam.
Ryan, who is also a student of the Jamaica College, got a bronze in the Boys Class One Long Jump with his best effort of 7.47M.
Sam gained a silver medal in the Class One Boys High Jump, clearing the bar at 2.00M.
Roban and Sam are former students of the St Vincent Grammar School, while Ryan last attended the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, before they headed off to Jamaica.
