Breadfruit News) – Minister with responsibility for the Public Service, Consumer Affairs and Sports Hon. Frederick “Gustaus” Stephenson announced on Thursday, June 10, 2021 that if a person is not fully vaccinated, he will not be seeing them at his work or constituency office, or at home.
Stephenson, who is serving his third five-year term as Member of Parliament (MP) for South Windward, addressed his Facebook fans in an announcement which read: “Important Notice: As of today, June 10, I will not see anyone at my place of residence, or the constituency office in Biabou or the Office of the Ministry of the Public Service until you have your certificate of full vaccination.” Please screenshot of post below.
Stephenson’s post was met with mixed reactions. He received some support, with some expressing their opinion that he had a right to protect himself, and one person even suggested that those who were not vaccinated should just call him.
Audrey Gittens, a Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Informal Human Settlement, Physical Planning, Lands and Survey, welcomed such announcement, saying: “Good. The people voted for representation, that does not mean that you should encourage them to infect you with COVID-19 which could possibly kill you. No vote is worth your life.”
Some commentators, however, criticized Stephenson’s position, with Gailann Timm saying this is calling it ““This is absurd! The ppl who voted you in office? The vaccine is not mandatory, so you do not have the right to deny your constituents access to the constituency office. But again you can do anything, cause that’s the modus operandi there.”
Shakeila A. Charles called the actions by MP Stephenson “utter rubbish”. Stephenson could require visitors to his house to meet such requirements, according to her, “… but the Government office that the people voted to put you to represent them? Oh please.”
Former President of St Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers’ Union and Teacher Ron Clarke shared his views by adding “Finding every means to force thus on people, eh? Well you won’t be seeing me,”
Others also expressed disappointment by stating “I’m so happy is not my vote put u there u full of s**t”.
ULP Facebook Activist the well-known Vincy Powa simply commented “A MOST BOLD and SOUND decision.
