JOY FOR SVG AT TOKYO OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY

There was only love online for St Vincent and the Grenadines as the country’s national flag graced the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  

800 metres runner, 22-year-old Shafiqua Maloney, flew SVG’s national flag high at the ceremony with many Vincentians sending love, respect and good luck over social media when it was SVG’s turn to take the stage.

Maloney’s full representation of SVG’s national colours from head to toe did not go unnoticed online.  

One social media commenter said: “Best of luck. Love the hair and outfit…” 

Another commenter added: “Represent from head-to-toe ah love it.” 

Shafiqua Maloney is part of a three-member team representing SVG in Tokyo. She is the only track and field athlete for SVG this year and will run the women’s 800 metres on July 30 from 9 pm.  

SVG’s Olympic team also comprises swimmers Mya De Freitas,15, and Shane Cadogan, 20.  

Cadogan is set to compete in the men’s 50m freestyle -Heat 3 on July 30 from 6:03 am and De Freitas in the women’s 50m freestyle- Heat 4 on July 30 from 6:23 am.
