The Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines are investigating the Assault on the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph E Gonsalves.
According to information received the police have in custody a female who is currently assisting with the investigating.
On Thursday 5th August, at approximately 5:15pm, the Honourable Ralph E. Gonsalves, was physically assaulted and wounded by protesters while attempting to enter the House of Assembly.
Protesters responded to a call to action from the Leader of the Opposition, picketed the Parliament, and blocked the entrance to the building.
When the crowd prevented the vehicle carrying the Prime Minister from driving through the gate of the Parliament, he alighted the vehicle and attempted to enter on foot, where someone hurled a projectile at the Prime Minister, which struck him in the head.
The Prime Minister who was bleeding profusely was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital by his security detail, where he was met by his wife.
Following preliminary results and on the advice of the medical professionals at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, Dr. Gonsalves was flown to Barbados last night for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to determine the extent of his injuries.
Finance Minister and son of Prime Minister Gonsalves, Hon. Camillo Gonsalves, Thursday night, urged the assailant who threw an object that resulted in PM Ralph Gonsalves being injured in the head, to surrender.
Young Gonsalves noted: “I want to ask the assailant — the assailant isn’t listening to me but I hope the Honourable Leader of the Opposition repeats my request because the assailant would listen to him. I’m going to ask the assailant to go to a lawyer and to turn yourself in. There is video footage of you making your attempt on the prime minister. I sincerely believe it will go better for you if you go and get a lawyer and turn yourself in”.
