TOO MANY GUNS,’ SAYS PROSECUTOR

Prosecutor Renrick Cato, attached to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), is concerned about the number of illegal firearms and firearm-related offences in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Cato, a police Sergeant, voiced his feeling while making recommendations for sentencing in the case of 18-year-old Jaheim Belgrave of Rose Place, who pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and five rounds of ammunition during an appearance at the Serious Offences Court on Monday.

“There are too many illegal firearms in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It is only a matter of time before Parliament revises the law again,” Cato commented.

Belgrave was one of two young men who pleaded guilty to possession of firearms and ammunition.

The other was 25-year-old Urhando Rock who pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited gun, and two rounds of ammunition.

Young men appear at the Serious Offences Court on an almost daily basis on gun-related charges, and Magistrates and lawyers have repeatedly commented on the situation.
