The Unity Labour Party (ULP) in St Vincent and the Grenadines, at its next party convention, will possibly begin the transition of leadership within the party.
Prime Minister of SVG and Political Leader of ULP, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, speaking on the WEFM’s Issue at Hand program on Sunday, made the disclosure.
It is not the first time Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, 75, who is the ULP’s political leader, has spoken about the need to pass on the mantle of leadership.
In 1994, Gonsalves became the deputy political leader of the party and, in 1998, became the political leader.
Giving an update on the ULP’s most recent national council meeting, Gonsalves said he addressed matters of government, politics and the question of how the ULP will proceed towards a transition.
“There is not a vacancy in the Office of the Prime Minister or political leader, but I discussed openly the question of moving to the transition and certainly having the way prepared for our convention on July 31, where we will elect a deputy political leader and may elect a political leader too while the prime minister continues, and we decide how far into the term he goes or whether he goes the full distance.”
Gonsalves made it clear that the ULP will have no confusion when it comes to the issue of succession.
“If there is any slight hint of confusion, you know I would not have it.”
