KINGSTOWN: Construction work on the Mesopotamia Community Centre recommenced on June P 2022. The establishment of this modern Community Centre replaces the old facility which was demolished to make way for the new Emergency Warehouse facility adjacent to the Levi Latham Polyclinic. It is expected that the facility will go a long way towards facilitating the increased vibrancy of the community.

Amenities that will be included in the facility are a computer lab, classrooms, conference room, food preparation and service area, general office, stage area and auditorium. The two-story facility will also have a storage room, change rooms, washrooms equipped with showers, a Janitor’s room and a parking lot. The design also caters for physically challenged persons.

The 8,705 sq. ft structure has a flexible and functional design that will allow internal spaces to respond seamlessly to future changes, if necessary. The building’s design also provides a low energy foot print, maximizing the use of natural light, ventilation and the adoption of efficient solutions for energy consuming operations. The facility will also be provided with a backup generator and water cistern for emergency events.

Work will also be carried out on an adjacent site with the construction of a retaining wall to secure the area for future development for the community.

Members of the Project Team will be engaged in house-to-house meetings with persons who reside close to the project site to bring them up to date on the project and speak about the activities during all phases of the project. The community will be advised accordingly.

The construction of the Mesopotamia Community Centre is being undertaken by the Ministry of Transport, Works, Lands and Physical Planning as part of a Natural Disaster Management (NDM) Project, for rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure. The Project Manager is FDL Consult Inc. and the Contractor is Franco Construction Ltd.

The construction of the Community Centre is being funded through a loan by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and is estimated to cost seven million EC dollars (EC$7m). The project is scheduled to be completed in June 2023.
