Member States of OPANAL are made up of all 33 states of Latin America and the Caribbean. OPANAL was established in 1969 by the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco). It institutionalized the first nuclear-weapon-free zone (NWFZ) in a densely populated area and prohibits: the testing, use, manufacture, production or acquisition by any means whatsoever of any nuclear weapons, directly or indirectly, within the region.

The Prime Minister and his delegation are currently in the United States ahead of their trip to the Republic of China on Taiwan for an official one-week visit.
